Lower Lola Montez Lake

December 2 found absolutely no snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains (this is bad!). Handy and I hiked in below freezing weather to Lower Lola Montez Lake – a high alpine lake surrounded by granite rocks near Donner Pass (I-80). For a 7-mile hike with less than 1000 feet of elevation gain, I sure was beat. I must be feeling all the food I ate during Thanksgiving and all the post-Thanksgiving ‘grazing.’ I can normally gain 10 to 15 pounds this time of year. Handy actually jumped in the lake where this picture was taken. Icicles were hanging from her belly hair.
