Good Friends in Southern Utah

On Nov. 4, two good friends I made in Patagonia met at my home after work – Robert from Germany and Nicole from Washington. This was Robert’s first trip to the States. We saw the election returns. Robert will never forget where he was when the next President of the United States was elected.

You can see a few pictures here…  see my pictures.

Sport Horse National Championship – Boise, Idaho

Throw the frisbie dad

I was bound, gagged and hauled off to the Sport Horse National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship near Boise, Idaho from September 20-28. Tamara took 2 horses and came away with 4 National Top Tens.  Some classes had 40+ horses.  My folks and some of their friends were able to attend.  Their visit was well planned – arriving the day after we set up and leaving the day before we packed up to come home.  If I was able to break away, I returned to the most awesome place to hang out that I discovered 2 years ago – JAVA at Hyde Park (1612 N 13th Street, Boise).  You gotta check it out if you’re in town.  Handy and I played frisbee a few times a day.  Other than drinking java and frisbee play, it was all horse stuff.

Dad’s Birthday

Dad’s birthday is today. We celebrated, in part, by taking the 4WD to Cathedral Valley in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. This backcountry road was 68 miles long. We started at highway 24 and the River Ford, where we forded the Fremont River, and returned via Caineville Wash. The Bentonite Hills reminded me of what I think Mars would look like, and the desert views and Cathedral Valley, with it’s spires and monoliths of sandstone, were spectacular. Dad picked a good route. We saw two 4WDs all day – in a National Park! Blue sky with temperatures in the 60′s. What a day! See the pictures by clicking on this link.

Banff Mountain Film Festival

Banff Poster

Spent the weekend of April 4-6 in Downieville, California with friends.  We meet the first weekend of April every year (5th year for me) for the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour (see my “Links” page).  The films are all about mountains and include a mix of film styles, from intense action films to longer documentary films.  Our annual get together is growing. We almost occupy the entire Riverside Inn.  See you all next year and I’m looking forward to a rematch of horseshoes!

Patagonia, South America

Terry, Mike and Robert

Click here for a link to a handful of pictures (OK, about 100 pics), which were whittled down from 4,800 to choose from! The pictures haven’t been touched up. (Thanks Terry and Robert for sharing pics.)

My friend, Terry, and I trekked in 3 main areas of southern Patagonia (the Southern tip of South America) from March 3 to March 27:

  1. Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
  2. Torres del Paine, Chile
  3. Los Glaciares (Mount Fitz Roy), Argentina

It was all hiking/backpacking and traveling. Traveling is not easy as you’re always on the go, but Terry made it look easy. I’m going to start calling Terry, “The Organizer.”

There were a lot of good memories. Highlights include:

  • Making new friends
  • Ascending John Gardner Pass in Torres del Paine and looking down on the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap
  • Watching the alpenglow on Monte Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre during sunrise
