Trekking Buddies

I was playing with the Movie Maker in Picasa (friends gave me the idea).  This is the tear jerker that was quickly produced.  My friends and I did our own stunts.  Click the link here…  Trekking Buddies.

Peru

Trekked in Peru from May 30 to June 29, 2010.  Enjoyed time in Cusco then hiked the Salkantay to Machu Picchu trek.  Then it was off to Huaraz and the Huayhuash circuit.  Much to share, later, after I get caught up with things.  In the meantime, please enjoy a few pics that still need captions.  Click here for pictures!

Nepal (some Thailand)

Nepali Kids

“Mysterious and Exotic, Nepal holds prime position in the imagination of every mountain lover and trekker in the world. It is home to the bulk of the Himalaya and, of course, Mt. Everest, planet Earth’s highest peak. In fact, of the world’s 14 highest peaks, 8 are in Nepal. It is also the birthplace of Buddha and home of the famed porters and mountain climbing Sherpa. This mixture of mountains and ancient culture make Nepal a magical land of superlatives and an absolute delight for trekkers.”

Great Flight

I flew out of Sacramento to Los Angeles on March 20 where I met up with Terry at LAX. We caught an 18-hour flight on Thai Airlines to Bangkok, Thailand. After a 5-hour layover, we continued on to Kathmandu, Nepal arriving in the afternoon of March 22. Kathmandu is the gateway for most Himalayan Treks.

Our flight was pleasant. Asian airline carriers rock! “Economy” on Thai Airlines is leaps and bounds above economy on American airline carriers. The spotless Airbus had plenty of leg room (at least 1-foot wider) allowing me to straighten my legs. Well-dressed attendants delivered steaming hot hand towels for washing before meals, menus with a couple of meal choices, real silverware, tasty food, and unlimited drinks.

Patagonia, South America

Terry, Mike and Robert

Click here for a link to a handful of pictures (OK, about 100 pics), which were whittled down from 4,800 to choose from! The pictures haven’t been touched up. (Thanks Terry and Robert for sharing pics.)

My friend, Terry, and I trekked in 3 main areas of southern Patagonia (the Southern tip of South America) from March 3 to March 27:

  1. Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
  2. Torres del Paine, Chile
  3. Los Glaciares (Mount Fitz Roy), Argentina

It was all hiking/backpacking and traveling. Traveling is not easy as you’re always on the go, but Terry made it look easy. I’m going to start calling Terry, “The Organizer.”

There were a lot of good memories. Highlights include:

  • Making new friends
  • Ascending John Gardner Pass in Torres del Paine and looking down on the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap
  • Watching the alpenglow on Monte Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre during sunrise

Hoover Wilderness – Yosemite

Fishing was good

October 2 – 4, 2007

Went backpacking with Terry in Hoover Wilderness and Yosemite National Park. The trailhead is located at Twin Lakes – near Bridgeport. We hiked up Little Slide Canyon and camped at Maltby Lake the first night (Hoover Wilderness). This is my 3rd trip to Maltby Lake. The hike seemed relatively easy compared to my first trip 30 years ago in my teens. Caught 8 trout for dinner.
